Neck Pain Treatment in Grand Rapids
Turning your head to check a blind spot shouldn’t come with a jolt of pain. Neither should scrolling through your phone or sitting through a workday at your desk. When neck pain creeps in, it starts limiting the small, everyday movements you never used to think twice about.
When Everyday Strain Turns Into a Stiff, Aching Neck
Neck pain develops when the muscles, joints, and discs in the cervical spine are put under more load than they’re built to handle, whether from a sudden injury or strain that builds up gradually. Once those tissues are irritated, even routine movements like checking over your shoulder can become uncomfortable or limited.
The Habits and Injuries Behind Most Neck Pain
Neck pain rarely comes out of nowhere. More often, it’s the result of daily patterns that quietly add stress to the cervical spine, or an injury that left behind lasting restriction. Some of the most common sources of ongoing neck strain include:
- Forward head posture from hours spent looking down at phones and screens
- Desk setups without proper monitor height
- Repetitive strain from desk work and everyday stress
- Whiplash-type injuries, even from minor fender benders
Confirming What’s Really Going On Before We Treat It
We start by assessing your posture, range of motion, and joint mobility in the cervical spine, and check for nerve involvement if pain radiates into the shoulders or arms. When indicated, we take X-rays to evaluate the underlying structure and confirm or rule out degenerative joint disease or other pathologies before beginning care. Imaging can also give us a baseline for tracking structural changes over time.
Treatment typically includes targeted adjustments to restore proper motion in the neck joints, soft tissue therapy for tight muscles, and postural correction exercises.
We’ll also cover ways to help prevent recurrence, including raising screens to eye level, taking regular breaks from phone and computer use, strengthening the upper back, and stretching the neck and chest. One patient came in with severe neck pain and had lost most of his range of motion. He could hardly look over his shoulder to back up his truck. After a course of care, he regained full range of motion and got back to doing what he loves: backing up his truck to launch his fishing boat, pain-free.
