Tight hamstrings, knots across the shoulders, a back that seizes up when you bend, or calves that cramp at night. Muscles that won’t let go limit how you move and can turn into nagging pain. We look for the cause of the problem instead of just covering up the symptoms.

Why Muscles Get Tight and Stay Tight

Muscles tighten to protect you. When a joint isn’t moving well, a muscle is overworked, or your body is short on what it needs to relax, the muscles around it guard and tense up. Over time that guarding creates knots, trigger points, and scar-like adhesions that keep the muscle short even after the original problem is gone. Getting lasting relief means addressing the joints, the muscle tissue, and how well your body is fueled.

Common Causes

  • Joints that aren’t moving well: muscles around a stiff spine or joint tighten up to protect it
  • Overuse and repetitive work: the same lifting, reaching, or sitting position day after day
  • Posture and long hours at a desk: see our posture & tech neck page
  • Workouts and weekend projects: doing too much too fast, or skipping recovery
  • Stress and poor sleep: tension tends to settle in the neck, shoulders, and low back
  • Dehydration and nutrition gaps: low fluids or minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium can make muscles more prone to cramping and spasm

Signs to Watch For

  • Stiffness that’s worse in the morning or after sitting
  • Tender knots you can feel in the neck, shoulders, back, or legs
  • Sudden spasms that lock up your back or neck
  • Leg or foot cramps, especially at night
  • Less range of motion, or stretching that only helps for a little while

How We Find the Source

We start with your history: where you feel it, when it started, your work, activity, sleep, and diet. Then we check your posture and range of motion, test muscle strength and flexibility, and feel for trigger points and restricted joints. When indicated, we take X-rays in our office. That tells us whether the muscle is the main problem or is reacting to something else.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

When stiff joints are part of the problem, an appropriate adjustment may restore motion so the surrounding muscles can stop guarding. Then we work directly on the tissue to release the tightness. Depending on what we find, your plan may include:

Nutritional Support for Tight Muscles

Muscles need the right fuel to contract and relax. If you’re getting frequent cramps, spasms, or tightness that keeps coming back, nutrition may be part of the picture. We can help you look at:

  • Hydration and electrolytes: even mild dehydration can make muscles more prone to cramping. Water alone isn’t always enough if you sweat a lot. We carry LMNT electrolyte drink mix right here in our office.
  • Minerals: magnesium, calcium, and potassium all play a role in how muscles relax
  • Inflammation and diet: whole foods over processed foods and sugar
  • A personalized plan: Nutrition Response Testing to guide whole-food supplement recommendations, available through our supplement store

Talk with us or your doctor before starting supplements, especially if you take medication or have kidney or heart concerns.

When to Get Emergency Care

Call 911 or go to the ER right away if muscle pain comes with chest pain or shortness of breath, a stiff neck with fever and severe headache, sudden weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or dark, cola-colored urine after intense exercise. Also see a doctor promptly for a calf that is swollen, warm, and red, which can be a sign of a blood clot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does stretching only help for a little while?

If a joint isn’t moving well or the muscle has knots and adhesions, the tightness comes right back. Restoring joint motion and releasing the tissue tends to give longer-lasting results, and then stretching helps you keep it.

Should I see a chiropractor or get a massage?

Often both. Adjustments address the joints and massage addresses the muscles. We offer both here in the same office so they work together in one plan.

Can magnesium help with muscle cramps?

Some people with frequent cramps are low in magnesium or other minerals, and getting enough may help. Staying hydrated with electrolytes, like the LMNT we carry in our office, can help too. We can look at your diet and use Nutrition Response Testing to see what fits you.

How long until my muscles loosen up?

Many people feel looser after the first few visits. Tightness that has built up over months or years takes longer and does best with a home plan. We’ll give you a realistic timeline after your exam.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can see a chiropractor in Minnesota without a referral. Some insurance plans have their own rules, and our front desk can help you check your benefits.
