Arm & Hand Numbness and Tingling Treatment in Grand Rapids

Illustration of nerves running from the neck through the shoulder, elbow and wrist into the handPins and needles in your fingers, a hand that falls asleep at night, or a grip that just isn’t what it used to be. These symptoms have a source, and finding it is the first step. We look for the cause of the problem instead of just covering up the symptoms.

Why Your Arm or Hand May Tingle

The nerves that run your arm and hand leave the spine through small openings in your neck. From there they travel through the shoulder, past the elbow, and through the wrist into your fingers. If limited motion, alignment changes, or tight muscles in the neck put pressure on or irritate a nerve, you can feel it far away from the neck itself. Pressure can also build further down the path, at the elbow or wrist, and sometimes in more than one spot at once.

Common Symptoms

  • Pins and needles in the hand or fingers
  • Numbness that comes and goes, often worse at night
  • A hand that “falls asleep” while driving, texting, or reading
  • Weak grip or dropping things
  • Pain that travels from the neck or shoulder blade down the arm

Where Along the Nerve Path the Problem May Be

  • Neck (pinched nerve): irritation where a nerve exits the spine, often with neck stiffness and pain down one arm. See our neck pain page.
  • Neck and shoulder (thoracic outlet): nerves squeezed between the collarbone, first rib, and neck muscles, common with rounded shoulders and overhead work.
  • Elbow (cubital tunnel): pressure on the “funny bone” nerve, usually felt in the ring and pinky fingers.
  • Wrist (carpal tunnel): pressure on the median nerve, usually felt in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, often at night.

Which Fingers Are Tingling?

Where you feel it gives us clues about which nerve or spinal level may be involved:

Where you feel it Neck level often involved Other spots to check
Thumb & index finger C6 Wrist (carpal tunnel)
Middle finger C7 Wrist (carpal tunnel)
Ring & pinky finger C8 Elbow (cubital tunnel), thoracic outlet
Outer shoulder & upper arm C5 Shoulder joint

This is a general guide, not a diagnosis. Patterns overlap, and an exam is what sorts it out.

How We Find the Source

We start with your history: when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it’s affecting work and sleep. Then we check reflexes, strength, and sensation in your arms and hands, and test the neck, shoulder, elbow, and wrist to see where symptoms are coming from. When indicated, we take X-rays in our office. If nerve testing or another provider makes more sense, we’ll tell you and help you get there.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

If limited motion in the neck is contributing, an appropriate adjustment may improve movement and reduce mechanical stress near the nerve. For many neck-related arm symptoms, conservative care may help without medication or surgery. Depending on what we find, your plan may include Diversified chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy for tight neck, shoulder, and forearm muscles, simple home stretches and nerve-glide exercises, and posture, desk, and sleep-position changes.

When to Get Emergency Care

Call 911 or go to the ER right away if arm numbness or weakness comes with sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, face drooping or trouble speaking, chest pain or shortness of breath, loss of bladder or bowel control, a recent fall or neck injury, or weakness that is getting worse quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a problem in my neck really cause numbness in my hand?

Yes. The nerves that supply your arm and hand start in your neck. Irritation where they exit the spine can cause tingling, numbness, or weakness anywhere along their path, even if your neck doesn’t hurt much.

How do I know if it’s carpal tunnel or my neck?

Which fingers are affected, whether you have neck pain, and how your exam tests out all help tell them apart. Some people have pressure in both places. We check the whole path, not just the wrist.

How long until I feel better?

It depends on what’s causing it and how long it’s been going on. Many people notice changes within the first few weeks of care. We’ll give you a realistic timeline after your exam.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can see a chiropractor in Minnesota without a referral. Some insurance plans have their own rules, and our front desk can help you check your benefits.

Can massage help with arm tingling?

Tight muscles in the neck, chest, and forearm can add pressure along the nerve path. Massage therapy can be a helpful part of care, and we offer it here in the same office.
