Dr. Ryan Davis, Grand Rapids chiropractor who overcame childhood migraines

If you live with migraines, you know they are much more than a bad headache. The pounding pain, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and lost days at work or with family can take over your life. At Davis Chiropractic Health & Wellness, P.A., we understand, because our founder has been there.

Dr. Davis Knows Migraines Firsthand

As a boy, Dr. Ryan Davis suffered migraines so severe that all he could do was lie in bed and wait for them to pass. Sometimes the pain made him vomit. By age 12, he was taking 6 to 8 ibuprofen a day just to get by, and as he got older the migraines became more frequent and more severe.

Then a bout of neck pain led him to try chiropractic care. After a series of adjustments, his neck pain improved, and he noticed something he didn’t expect: the headaches had stopped too. That experience is the reason he became a chiropractor. Today, helping people find natural relief from migraines and headaches is one of the most rewarding parts of his work.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Migraines have many possible triggers, and every patient is different. For many people, tension and restricted motion in the upper neck, poor posture, and muscle tightness in the shoulders and jaw can play a role. Our goal is to find and address the factors that may be contributing to your migraines, rather than simply masking the pain.

Your care plan may include:

  • Gentle chiropractic adjustments to restore motion in the neck and upper back, with low-force instrument options if you prefer no “cracking”
  • Soft tissue therapy for tight neck, shoulder, and jaw muscles, including Graston and ART
  • Massage therapy to ease muscle tension and stress
  • Posture and ergonomic coaching for work, driving, and screen time
  • Nutrition Response Testing to look for possible food sensitivities and nutritional factors

Common Migraine Triggers To Watch For

  • Stress and poor sleep
  • Neck tension and forward head posture
  • Skipped meals and dehydration
  • Certain foods and drinks, such as alcohol, aged cheese, or too much caffeine
  • Bright lights, screens, and strong smells
  • Hormonal changes and weather shifts

Keeping a simple headache journal of when your migraines start, what you ate, and how you slept can help reveal patterns we can work on together.

When To Seek Emergency Care

Most migraines are not dangerous, but some headaches need immediate medical attention. Call 911 or go to the emergency room if you have a sudden, severe “worst headache of your life,” a headache after a head injury, or a headache with confusion, weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, vision loss, fever, or a stiff neck.

More Than Migraines

We also help with tension headaches and headaches that start in the neck. Learn more on our Headaches page.
