Graston Technique & Active Release Techniques In Grand Rapids, MN

Dr. John Joki, certified Graston Technique and ART provider in Grand Rapids MN

Not every pain comes from the spine. Tight, overworked, or scarred muscles, tendons, and ligaments can cause stiffness, weakness, and nagging pain that won’t go away on its own. At Davis Chiropractic Health & Wellness, P.A., Dr. John Joki is certified in both Graston Technique® and Active Release Techniques® (ART®), two widely used soft tissue therapies trusted by athletic trainers and sports medicine providers across the country.

Combined with chiropractic adjustments, these techniques help us address the whole problem, not just part of it.

BOOK WITH DR. JOKI

What Is Graston Technique?

Graston Technique is an instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy. Dr. Joki uses specially designed stainless steel instruments to detect and treat areas of scar tissue, adhesions, and restriction in muscles, tendons, and fascia. The instruments let him pinpoint problem areas precisely and apply targeted pressure to break up restrictions, improve blood flow, and help tissue heal properly.

What Is Active Release Techniques (ART)?

Active Release Techniques is a hands-on, movement-based soft tissue treatment. Dr. Joki applies precise pressure to a specific muscle, tendon, ligament, or nerve while you move the area through a targeted range of motion. This helps release adhesions that limit movement and can trap nerves, restoring smoother, pain-free motion.

Conditions We Commonly Treat

Graston and ART can help with many soft tissue injuries and repetitive strain problems, including:

  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendon pain
  • Shoulder and rotator cuff strain
  • Carpal tunnel and wrist pain
  • IT band syndrome and knee pain
  • Hamstring, hip, and groin strains
  • Neck and low back muscle tightness
  • Shin splints
  • Scar tissue after injury or surgery

Who Benefits?

These therapies are a great fit for:

  • Athletes – runners, hockey and football players, golfers, and weekend warriors looking to recover faster and perform better (see Sports Chiropractic)
  • Workers – factory, trades, and logging workers dealing with repetitive motion and heavy lifting
  • Desk workers – people with tight necks, shoulders, wrists, and hips from long hours at a computer
  • Anyone with a strain or overuse injury that keeps coming back

What To Expect

Your first visit starts with an exam so Dr. Joki can find exactly which tissues are involved. Treatment is often combined with chiropractic adjustments, stretching, and simple home exercises. Many patients notice improved movement within the first few visits. Some mild soreness afterward is normal and usually fades within a day or two, much like after a good workout.
